The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) has won the bid to represent Ghana in this year’s Petro Bowl Quiz competition scheduled to take place on the 19th March 2016, at Benin City of Nigeria. This was after the University, represented by students of the Department of Petroleum Engineering won the context out of the five Universities that contested. The programme which has been organized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) since 2002, made history this time around when UMaT as a host institution also won at the same time.
Speaking at the programme, the student representative for SPE Ghana Chapter, Mr. James Allotey–Okai said that the SPE Petro Bowl Competition does not take place in Ghana alone but also worldwide. According to him, the Quiz was organized to select a winner to represent Ghana at the Africa Regional Petro Bowl qualifiers in Nigeria. He also indicated that the mission was to collect, disseminate, and exchange technical knowledge concerning the exploration, development and production of Oil and Gas resources and related technologies for the benefit of the public. Mr. Allotey-Okai added that the winner is qualified to represent the Africa Regional Petro Bowl Competition and the winner would be qualified for the annual conference and exhibition to be held in Dubai.
In an interview with the Faculty Adviser for SPE, UMaT Chapter and Lecturer at the Department of Petroleum Engineering, Mr Richard Amorin said Petro Bowl Competition has really helped students to acquire more knowledge from both ‘in’ and ‘outside’ the classroom. According to him, the questions from the competitions go beyond what they studied in class. Mr Amorin said that UMaT joined the SPE Petro Bowl Competition only last year but were able to win the 3rd position. This was their second time of participating but due to hard work and determination they became 1st. This according to Mr Amorin shows that the UMaT students have really improved in their studies.
The Public Relations Officer for SPE Petro Bowl UMaT Chapter, William Divine Bakorko expressed his gratitude to the members of SPE for organizing a successful competition.
In an interview with some competitors from the other Universities, they all pledged their support for UMaT. According to them, a win for UMaT at the next level of the competition will be a win for Ghana.
