The Mathematical Sciences Department as one of the Academic Department in the Faculty of Engineering. It was initially instituted as a servicing Department handling various Mathematics courses in all the Departments under University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in 2004. In 2006, it became necessary for the Department to run its own tertiary programme; BSc. in Mathematics. The first batch of students admitted to pursue the programme were 18. The Department has up to date produced over 200 world class professionals who are contributing positively in the Education, Health, Science, Finance and other sectors in Ghana and beyond. In order to provide a pathway for the graduates to further develop themselves, a postgraduate programme was introduced which has existed till date. The Department can currently boast of eighteen (18) academic staff among which five are females. Due to the high level of commitment and dedication of staff, the overall best graduating student for both male and female category for the 12th Congregation of the University of Mines and Technology emerged from the Department.
